Dance/Movement Therapy: Reconnect Through Movement
Weekly guided movement classes for people living with endometriosis. Return to breath, rhythm, and expression in a small, supportive group every Thursday. No dance experience is needed.
You might be wondering...
What is Dance Movement Therapy and how is it different from exercise or yoga?
Dance Movement Therapy (DMT) is a therapeutic practice that uses movement to support emotional, physical, and psychological well-being. Unlike exercise or yoga, the focus is not on fitness, flexibility, or performing specific movements correctly.
Instead, DMT invites you to explore your own natural movement and rhythm. Movements are guided by your internal experience, how your body feels, what emotions arise, and what feels supportive in the moment. There is no choreography to follow and no "right" way to move. The goal is to listen to your body and allow movement to emerge from within.
Why is DMT particularly helpful for people with endometriosis?
Living with endometriosis often involves chronic pain, tension, fatigue, and emotional stress. Gentle, exploratory movement can help people reconnect with their bodies in ways that feel supportive rather than demanding.
Dance Movement Therapy may help by:
- Increasing body awareness and helping you notice where you hold tension
- Supporting gentle release of muscular holding patterns associated with pain
- Encouraging self-expression and emotional processing through movement
- Promoting nervous system regulation through breath and rhythmic motion
- Creating a sense of connection and shared experience with others who understand chronic illness
The session emphasizes choice and self-pacing, so you can move as little or as much as feels right for you.
What will we actually DO in the session?
During the session we will explore gentle movement together in a supportive environment. Activities may include:
- Breath and body awareness based discussion and movement
- Guided movement practices inspired by somato-respiratory integration
- Improvisational movement, where you explore your own natural flow
- Moving with instrumental music that supports relaxation and creativity
- Opportunities for free exploration without judgment or performance
At the end of the session, we will have a short reflection and discussion, where participants can share insights, sensations, or feelings that emerged, if they wish.
Do I need any dance experience or special equipment?
No dance experience is needed at all. This session is about exploration, not performance. All bodies and all movement styles are welcome.
All you need is:
- Comfortable clothing you can move in
- A small amount of space where you can move safely
- A notebook and something to write with for optional reflection
